Crape Myrtle Bonsai Project Repotting Videos

Well, iMovie gave me a bunch of grief, so I was unable to merge these two clips into one for uploading to YouTube. So, there are two clips instead of just one.

Part 1

Part 2

Sadly, almost immediately after repotting, all the leaves wilted, and while I thought this was just shock and that they’d recover — especially because they stayed supple and soft for some days — they are now all dry and crispy.

So, I may be pruning the tree down much sooner than expected in the hopes that reducing the over all bio-mass encourages the roots to continue to support what remains.

If anyone looking at my soil mixture spots an obvious mistake I’ve made with it, please alert me to how I could correct this.

Version 5.

The last version had some weirdness going on with fast fades that were meant to be subtle disappearances. The goal was the try to control the long echoes to keep them from lasting forever and a day. Ultimately I ended up ripping all that out.

I also played around with some bells and bell tunings, but in the end I came back to this.

I slowed the piece from 37b/m to 30.

The fourth version of Nothing But Time is available on Soundcloud.

Quite a bit of monkeying around went on this time and my hope is that this has enough variety and space in it to keep it engaging, without losing that sense of decontextualized time passing. One of the bell samples is quite low frequency, so quality listening environments are recommended (not iPod ear buds).

Crape Myrtle Bonsai Project — Repotted, Video Soon

The crape myrtle found its way into the tray this past weekend and is currently in recovery. The leaves are all quite wilted and I’m waiting for the soil mixture I used to dry out in the hopes that this will shake the thing back to perkiness. I may have to consider changing up the ratios of the potting mixture as this looks like it may retain water much better than I’d anticipated and I don’t want to have an ongoing panic about root rot.

Video is in “post production” and will be hosted to YouTube soon.

The mini plant, intended for cascade, is likely to get some initial wiring very soon because it is growing faster than I can pinch it back.

After some great feedback from iconographer Nick Papas, my non-liturgical art collaborative partner, the third version of Nothing But Time is available on Soundcloud.

Nick pointed out that the underlying synthesis sounded more like a calliope than a church bell, so I made some changes there. It still isn’t 100% church bell, but we’re getting closer.

The second version of Nothing But Time is up on Soundcloud.

I got the echoes dialed back and opened up the space in this track quite a bit compared to the first version. I’m much happier with this, now.
